Traveling Internationally With Your Pet?
International Health Certificates Require Planning
Many pet owners are surprised to learn that obtaining an international health certificate is not a one-visit service. Every country has its own import requirements, which may include specific vaccinations, microchip verification, parasite treatments, laboratory testing, waiting periods, and USDA endorsement.
Depending on your destination, preparation can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. For this reason, we strongly encourage you to contact us as soon as you know you may be traveling.
Please notify us at least 1-2 weeks before you need your certificate, and preferably much earlier for international travel. Requests made on short notice may result in delays to your travel, and may not allow enough time to complete all destination requirements before your departure.
Our team is happy to help research your destination's requirements and create a timeline to help ensure your travel plans stay on track.
Getting Started
Before scheduling your travel appointment, please complete our Travel Certificate Form. Once we receive your information, our team will review your travel requirements and contact you regarding next steps.
At your appointment, we will:
- Perform a physical examination to ensure your pet is healthy for travel
- Verify your pet's identification and microchip information, if required
- Review vaccination records and destination-specific requirements
- Confirm any required treatments, testing, or additional documentation
- Complete the necessary health certificate paperwork
Tips for Air Travel
Air travel can be stressful for pets. Whenever possible, we recommend traveling with your pet in the cabin if airline requirements allow. This is often less stressful than cargo travel and allows you to monitor your pet throughout the journey.
Be sure your pet has access to water, opportunities for exercise and relief before departure, and a comfortable, airline-approved carrier. We generally do not recommend sedatives for air travel, but our veterinarians are happy to discuss any concerns and help determine the safest travel plan for your pet.
